The Book as Tool and Verb
In my teaching at Washington University I use traditional book arts techniques, typesetting, printing, binding, to reinforce thinking, writing, and designing, taking place in sequential format. Authorship and design are taught as behaviours that take the book as their form, but are transferable to other formats as well. 20 years after the predicted demise of the book we see an explosion in the book arts in America. This is not because the book represents a quaint or precious object but because it represents a tool for focusing one's vision on a topic and making it understandable, as well as personal.

Teaching career in design, typography and book arts includes Center for Book Arts, New York, Parsons School of Design, New York, City College, New York, Yale University, Washington University where I direct the Kranzberg Studio for the Book. Recipient of awards from the National Endowment of the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts. Fulbright Fellow, 2005-2006, in residence at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad.
