Teaching Book Arts: Collaborative Learning and Interdisciplinarity
The Conference workshop was designed to encourage collaboration among those involved in all aspects of the book. The PowerPoint presentation communicated the approach the presenters developed for their team-taught course, The Art of the Book. For their workshop they presented their interpretation of the Conference theme "Save, Change and Discard" with a session combining a PowerPoint presentation on the early codex with a studio activity on Coptic stitching. The “Change” involved working with “Discarded” materials, in this case Conference ephemera. Participants left the session with a handmade book of their own making. Our hope was to inspire creativity among all concerned with the future of the book.

Laura Rinaldi Dufresne is currently in her 18th year of teaching art history at Winthrop University. She earned her doctorate from the University of Washington, Seattle in 1989. Her research includes medieval manuscripts and women’s’ studies as well as ceramics, costume and textile history. Dufresne has published on the illuminated manuscripts of Christine de Pizan, pedagogy and sculpture in Dress: History of Historic Costume; Women’s Studies, Transformations, Ceramics Art and Perception and Women’s Art Journal. She is active in the arts integration movement in public schools via the Arts in the Basic Curriculum program in South Carolina, fosters dogs for the Animal Adoption League and has received a variety of grants and awards for academic and public service. She teaches The Art of the Book bi-annually, constantly adapting the course to accommodate student’s needs. Once strictly a lecture course on medieval manuscripts, the course evolved into a study of the book through time, now including the modern artist book and eBook. Recently she has collaborated with art educator and book artist Laura Gardner to add studio sessions to the course including paper making, book binding, illuminated letters, printmaking, typesetting, computer software and more.

Laura Gardner has been teaching art education at Winthrop University for ten years, and directs the Masters of Arts in Arts Administration Program. She earned her Masters degree from Bank Street College of Education/Parsons School of Design in New York, NY, and is a doctoral candidate in Reflective Art Education at Union Institute and University in Cincinnati Ohio. She is a practicing artist and has worked as a book maker, fiber artist, designer, printer maker and painter in New York and the Carolinas. Her interests include the philosophy of education, book arts, progressive arts education, design, service learning, bricolage and narrative. She has received grants and awards in the areas of pedagogy, service learning and arts education and has exhibited her artist’s books regionally. As an artist, student teacher supervisor and Graduate Degree Administrator, she is experienced in all levels of arts education, both public and private, from elementary school through the university and beyond to the community at large.
